Open Academy, Norwich

The Open Academy Norwich is currently the largest building in the UK made solely out of cross-laminated timber.

For Kier, it was essential to deliver an exemplary building for the Open Academy Norwich - from its embodied energy to sustainability and ongoing environmental performance - which is why they selected KLH's unique and highly environmentally efficient cross laminated timber construction method.

Kier and KLH UK had recently completed the acclaimed St John Fisher School in Peterborough, so that gave Kier the confidence that KLH 's cross laminated timber panel system would deliver the project on time, within budget and to the highest possible environmental and sustainability standards.

Carbon Calculation

  • KLH cross-laminated timber volume for Open Academy Norwich is 3,095m3
  • KLH panels removed approximately 2,476 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere
  • 140.4 tonnes of emitted CO2 from transporting the KLH panels from Austria to Norwich
  • Offsetting the CO2 emissions from the transport therefore shows a 'nett gain' of 2,335 tonnes (CO2 removed from the atmosphere)

Ultimately, the timber superstructure for Open Academy Norwich contains 760 tonnes of sequestered/stored carbon.

"For Kier, it was essential to deliver an exemplary building for the Open Academy Norwich - from its embodied energy to sustainability and ongoing environmental performance - which is why we selected KLH's unique and highly environmentally efficient cross-laminated timber construction method.

We had recently completed the acclaimed St. John Fisher School in Peterborough using timber structures designed, manufactured and erected by KLH, so we were confident in the knowledge that the cross-laminated timber panel system would ensure that the project was wholly achievable on time, within budget and to the highest possible environmental and sustainable standards.  We enjoy a good working relationship with KLH UK and we look forward to working with them on future projects."  Graham Howe, Managing Director, Kier Eastern
